Article: Becoming a eco-friendly family 🌴

Becoming a eco-friendly family 🌴

Maybe you have always been environmentally conscious or are starting to think about sustainability since becoming a new parent.  We all want to leave our children and future generations with a planet that will last but becoming an eco-friendly family can seem a bit daunting, especially with little ones.  But it can be done!  Here are some tips to become an eco-friendly family.

Reuse or repurpose.  With little ones, they are growing so fast.  Clothes that fit yesterday may not fit today.  Beloved toys become yesterday’s news and add to the growing pile of things you want to get rid of.  You may feel like you are constantly throwing things away.  When purchasing clothes, use neutral colors so that you can save them for future siblings or to pass on to family or friends.  Neutral colors are more popular second-hand because they are gender neutral.  We have a beautiful line of neutral color outfits that are not only adorable and classic but will sustain and last for quite some time.   Check out this beautiful set that will be loved for years and through many little ones to come: Hey Cutie Set.

Need any ideas to combat all the toys they have?  When friends or family ask what your child will like for birthdays and holidays, tell them your children would prefer experiences.  Gift cards to go roller skating or to the zoo.  This will help reduce all the toys they will collect from birthdays or holidays.  Another idea is don’t have all their toys out in their playroom.  Pack half of them away.  When your child becomes bored, break out the old toys.  It’s like they received a whole new set of toys!!

Teach them early.  Create environmentally friendly habits and routines now.  Include your children in helping with the day-to-day tasks.  We are our child’s first teachers and teaching them early how to recycle or reuse will be a skill they will use all their life.  Let them help sort between paper and plastic.  Spend more time outdoors as a family.  Visit the parks and let them enjoy nature.  When children grow up with an appreciation of their environment they are more likely to continue their eco-friendly lifestyle and pass it down to their own children.

Bring your own items.  Cut down on styrofoam and disposable items by bringing your own items with you.  When you go to a restaurant, you may notice that they always give children styrofoam cups with plastic straws.  Have them fill up your personal sippy cup and use a reusable straw.  Have cloth napkins on hand so that you don’t have to use paper napkins to wipe down your little one’s messes.

Build a garden.  Not only is building a garden fun and a great learning experience for little ones, but it is also a great way to build a sustainable living.  By growing your own garden, you can avoid toxic pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic fertilizers while creating habitats for natural species in your area.  You can even grow your own food.  Want your children to eat their vegetables?  You may be surprised to find that when they are helping grow their own food, they are more likely to eat it!

Make your own composite for your garden.  Did you know that compositing can help avoid putting more items in the garbage, reducing your trash by 30%? To learn more about composting, visit this informative site:  https://learn.eartheasy.com/guides/composting/

Be practical.  While we wish we could recycle and reuse everything, it may not be realistic in our every day.  Figure out what is practical for your family.  Some families can use cloth diapers all the time while some may be restricted by day-care requirements or busy lifestyles.  Find out things that are convenient for your family.  Maybe it's as simple as keeping reusable shopping bags in your car or purse.  It can also be buying items in bulk or in paper packaging so they are easier to recycle.  Find what works for your family and by keeping the environment in mind you are already contributing to an eco-friendly family lifestyle.

Choose eco-friendly businesses.  Today’s trends show that more and more people are keeping the environment in mind - even in their everyday purchases.  Because of this, more companies try to become environmentally sustainable.  But how can you tell the difference between those who are just putting on a green marketing campaign and ones who are truly investing in sustainability?  Choose companies that have recyclable packaging, are ethical when sourcing materials and have environmentally conscious manufacturing processes.  Do your research.

Be flexible.  You don’t have to dive 100% into an eco-friendly family lifestyle today.  Add a bit each more every month to what is what your family can do.  Some days are easier than others and that is okay.  Remember being eco-friendly also means becoming eco-conscience - always keeping the environment in our mind every day.
